Loris Stecca of Italy suffered a compound fracture of the jaw, doctors said, when the boxer lost his World Boxing Assn. junior-featherweight title fight to champion Victor Callejas of Puerto Rico Friday night at Rimini, Italy.
The referee stopped the fight on the advice of the ring doctor after the sixth round of the scheduled 15-round bout. Doctors said Stecca will have to remain in the hospital for 40 days.
The bout was only the second defense of the title by Callejas since he took it from Stecca in May 1984. Stecca was champion for only three months.
