The South Gate Planning Commission has voted to recommend that the City Council adopt a proposed amendment to the city’s zoning ordinance to allow fortune-telling and palmistry in certain areas and under certain conditions. The amendment will have its first reading at the Dec. 9 City Council meeting, planning aide Aubrey D. Fenderson said.

The proposed amendment would allow fortune-telling and palmistry activities in the city’s general commercial zone only and would require anyone operating such a business to apply for a conditional use permit, even if it is an existing business changing ownership. The amended ordinance also would require an annual police record check of the applicant and his employees. There would have to be at least 600 feet between each of those businesses, Fenderson said.
