NBA Roundup : McCray, Olajuwon Lead Rockets to Sixth Straight Win

Rodney McCray and Akeem Olajuwon each scored 25 points Thursday night to lead the Houston Rockets to their sixth straight victory, 112-107 over the New Jersey Nets at Houston.

New Jersey has lost all five of its road games this season.

Micheal Ray Richardson led the Nets with 21 points, including three jumpers in the final 90 seconds. Olajuwon and Mitchell Wiggins each hit two free throws in the final minute to secure the win.

New Jersey pulled within three points with 3:30 left on two free throws by Darryl Dawkins, who had 15 points, but John Lucas hit a layup to give Houston a 106-101 advantage.

Tough defense and the shooting of Lucas, who hit a 15-foot jumper at the third-quarter buzzer, gave Houston an 80-78 lead. The Rockets limited New Jersey to 8 of 27 shots from the field during the fourth quarter.

Otis Birdsong had 20 points for New Jersey, and Lucas finished with 22 for the Rockets.

The Rockets led, 36-33, at the end of the first quarter, but 12 points by Birdsong in the second quarter led New Jersey to a 57-54 halftime lead.

Sacramento 112, Golden State 103--Eddie Johnson hit 11 consecutive points in the fourth quarter to lead the Kings past the Warriors at Sacramento.

The win ended Golden State’s four-game winning streak.

Johnson scored 22 of his 29 points in the second half. Reggie Theus hit four free throws in the final 36 seconds to clinch the win for the Kings.

Purvis Short led the Warriors with 32 points.

Cleveland 112, Indiana 104--Roy Hinson scored 23 points, and World B. Free added 19 in the second half to lead the Cavaliers at Indianapolis.

The Cavaliers led 88-85, then ran off 10 straight points when Coach George Karl inserted Free and Melvin Turpin into the game.

The Pacers shot 64% in the first quarter but only 27% in the second. Indiana shot 46% for the game.

Steve Stipanovich led the Pacers with 23 points while Vern Flemming had 20.

Denver 112, San Antonio 109--Alex English scored 33 points, and Wayne Cooper added 24 points and 7 blocked shots to lead the Nuggets at Denver, ending the Spurs’ three-game winning streak.

Mike Mitchell led the Spurs with 22 points. Steve Johnson and Alvin Robertson scored 15 apiece.
