A personnel blunder by Coach Bum Phillips has caused the New Orleans Saints to lose veteran linebacker Jim Kovach to the San Francisco 49ers.
New Orleans gambled Friday by trying to sneak Kovach through procedural waivers rather than use the team’s last of five free activations from the injured reserve squad.
The 49ers and the Houston Oilers each put in a claim for the seven-year veteran from Kentucky, who underwent knee surgery earlier this season and has been sidelined.
The 49ers got Kovach for the waiver price of $100.
