CRY OF THE FOOTBALL FAN--’WE WUZ ROBBED’

What is this? A football “Twilight Zone”?

“We’re in a time warp,” as Rod Serling used to say (slightly altered). “You’re on a route to the land of the different, the bizarre, the unexplainable. . . .”

Trouble is, the situation facing football fans here today is explainable: a non-sellout and a probation period have robbed us this weekend of two big games being televised locally.

So, in a sense, it is like a “Twilight Zone,” going back in time to recall the days before television when there was only radio. The Southland’s perennial Big Game today, USC vs. UCLA, is only live on radio--1:30 p.m., KMPC (710) and KNX (1070)--because of the existing Trojan troubles with the NCAA.

Sunday’s big NFL showdown, meanwhile, pitting the Raiders against the Denver Broncos, is blacked out, too--denied fans because of that ridiculous Coliseum sellout figure of 92,000-plus demanded by the recalcitrant owner of the Raiders, Al Davis, before he’ll allow the game to be seen. So you’ll only get that game live on radio--1 p.m. on KRLA (1110).

Old Blue and Gold and Cardinal fans--Cal and Stanford, that is--have grown accustomed to not seeing their annual Big Game, since in recent years neither school has had a season worthy of the networks putting it on. But they can hear it all on radio today at 1 p.m., KLAC (57O).

SHORT TAKES: The oldest college football rivalry? Does it involve Rutgers, Colgate, Syracuse? Guess again. It’s Lafayette vs. Lehigh, who meet today for the 121st time in Bethlehem, Pa., on SPN cable, 10 a.m. For comparison, Princeton and Yale have played 107 times. . . .

There’s a postscript on that “Operation Snowball” that cost the 49ers a game in Denver the other week. The guy who threw it, disrupting what might have been the winning field goal, shamefully confessed to the San Francisco Examiner and apologized. Still wishing anonymity, he later told the paper that he had discovered he won $125 in a pool, thanks to the 49ers losing, but that he’s sending the money to Matt Cavanaugh (the holder) and Ray Wersching (the kicker) to give to their favorite charities.
