QBs Top Draw as Long Beach, Fullerton Play

Share

While UCLA and USC are staging their big game in the sold-out Coliseum, two other Southland football rivals will get together today for their annual head-bashing.

Cal State Long Beach will play Cal State Fullerton at 1 p.m. at Santa Ana Stadium, but it’s neither team’s big game.

Long Beach, 6-5 overall and 4-2 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn., played its big game last week. The 49ers were beaten by Fresno State in the title-decider, 33-31. Fullerton, 4-5 and 3-2, hasn’t had a big game since last year and isn’t due for another until, at the earliest, 1986.

Still, there is interest. Long Beach has veteran quarterback Doug Gaynor, who has passed for 3,262 yards and 18 touchdowns in 11 games and is trying to break the NCAA single-season completion percentage mark of .713, held by BYU’s Steve Young.

Against him, Fullerton is throwing freshman Tony Dill. Last week, in his second start, Dill threw for three touchdowns.
