Long Beach Rolls to Win Over Bucknell
Center Vince Jefferson scored 16 points and pulled down 17 rebounds as Cal State Long Beach defeated cold-shooting Bucknell, 65-45, in the consolation game of the Tipoff basketball tournament Sunday night.
Jefferson, a 6-foot-8 junior, controlled the backboards, with 12 of his rebounds coming off missed Bucknell shots.
The victory evened Long Beach’s record at 1-1. Bucknell is now 0-2 after losing both games in the tournament.
Forward Reggie Wallace scored 17 points for Long Beach. Bucknell, which hit only 28% of its shots from the field, got nine points from reserve guard Mark Lezanic and eight from guard Mark Allsteadt.
Long Beach, which won only four games last season, took control early and held a 29-24 lead.
The 49ers steadily pulled away in the second half, when they used their quickness and inside height advantage and hit on 53% of their shots.
