COLLEGE BASKETBALL : Cal Lutheran Falls to Chapman in Last Seconds, 69-65

Point guard Jim Saia hit four straight free throws in the final seven seconds Saturday night to give Chapman a 69-65 victory over visiting Cal Lutheran.

Chapman (2-2) fell behind as the Kingsmen (2-2) took a four-point lead, 65-61, with 1:32 remaining. But Wayne Briggs and Jon Samuelson scored on layups to tie the game at 65-all with with 32 seconds left.

Cal Lutheran played for one shot, but freshman Adam Lockwood stole the ball and fed Saia on the break. Saia was intentionally fouled and dropped in the winning free throws. Since the foul was intentional, the Panthers were given possession. Saia was again fouled and added a pair of one-and-ones with five seconds left.

St. Mary’s 76, Cal Lutheran (women) 57--In their season opener at St. Mary’s College, the Gaels were paced by freshman guard Julie Berchtold, who came off the bench to score 14 points.

St. Mary’s led at the half, 44-23, but Cal Lutheran narrowed the gap to 51-43 with 13 minutes remaining in the game. Cal Lutheran was led in scoring by guard Jonie Thompson, who had a game-high 21 points on 9 of 13 from the field. Cal Lutheran’s record is 2-3.
