A helicopter operated by the group that is airlifting goats off San Clemente Island developed engine trouble 10 miles east of the U.S. Navy property but made a safe emergency landing on the island’s south end, Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Ruth Lawrence said. The pilot, Milton Cain, and his two passengers were not injured, she said. Cain broadcast a May Day signal as the crew was flying to the island as part of the Fund for Animals’ mission to remove wild goats from the Navy property. A Coast Guard helicopter was dispatched after the distress call, but the pilot of the disabled aircraft had landed safely before the rescue craft arrived.
