A high-strung horse that proved too much for the San Diego’s Police Department mounted patrol is to be auctioned off to the highest bidder this weekend--along with some old vehicles, office equipment and other Police Department castoffs.

Jesse, a bay thoroughbred gelding that was among the five horses that originated the 3-year-old patrol, will be sold at the 10 a.m. auction Saturday at the County Operations Center, 5555 Overland Ave. Interested bidders may inspect him Thursday and Friday at the Police Department stables in Balboa Park’s Gold Gulch.

Bill Robinson, a spokesman for the department, said the horse turned out to be too highly strung for police work. “It demanded an experienced rider,” said Robinson, who referred to the animal as “an active horse.”
