Cal State Dominguez Hills forward William Alexander scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help the Toros beat Cal Lutheran, 72-56, in a nonconference game Saturday at Cal Lutheran.

Alexander, a bulky 6-4 junior from Washington High in Los Angeles, scored 17 points in the first half. He scored from inside, outside and on two resounding break-away slam dunks, pacing the Toros to an insurmountable 38-29 lead at intermission.

“We knew about him before the game,” Cal Lutheran Coach Ed Anderson said. “But there was nothing we could do about it. We tried to stop him, but he just played great.”

Alexander had help from forward Tony Akins, who’s physique gives the Toros (2-2) what could best be described as Twin Bulls in the front court.

Akins, a 6--5 freshman from Muir High in Pasadena, came into the contest as Dominguez Hills’ leading scorer, averaging 21 points a game. His 35 points last week against Biola was a school record.

Akins wasn’t a big factor in the first half, but he had 18 points and provided the key plays that helped fend off the first of two Cal Lutheran rallies in the second half that had cut the Toros’ lead to four.

Cal Lutheran’s Darren Ranck hit a jump shot from the corner that made the score 42-38 with 15:30 left in the game. Akins then took control of the Toros’ offense, scoring on two jump shots from the foul line, a tip-in and a free throw that helped give Dominguez Hills a 51-43 lead.

Cal Lutheran (2-4) again drew within four when Karl Slattum sank a jump shot to make the score 51-47 with 9:56 remaining.

This time, Alexander took charge for the Toros and scored five points in a three-minute stretch that helped Dominguez Hills increase the lead to 58-48.
