Boys’ Basketball : Troy Wins With Timely Defense, 59-52

Troy High School, trailing 28-27 at halftime, held Magnolia to two field goals in the third quarter to win a second-round game in the Irvine Tournament at University High School.

Rob Burrer, who sat out last season after transferring from Servite, paced the Warriors to the 59-52 victory by hitting 7 of 12 shots and scoring 16 points. Mike Picciotta added 12 points for Troy (4-4). Jeff Ferren had 10 points and 6 assists. Mark Lyons led Magnolia with 20 points.

In other Irvine Tournament action:

Estancia 62, Don Lugo 44--Brian Tift scored 8 of his 12 points in the first quarter to stake the Eagles to a lead that they never relinquished at University.

Rancho Alamitos 58, Marina 53 (OT)--Guard Roger Carter scored 27 points and pulled down 15 rebounds as the Vaqueros nipped the Vikings at University. Craig Paquette added 12 points for Rancho Alamitos.

Corona 63, Laguna Hills 57--Laguna Hills outscored Corona, 33-24, in the fourth quarter but fell short in its comeback attempt at Woodbridge.

Mission Viejo 87, Western 60--Tim Knowles scored 25 points, and Jeff Herdman added 22 to lead the Diablos at Woodbridge. Western’s Troy Joseph led all scorers with 27 points.

Foothill 68, Norco 33--The Knights crushed the Cougars at UC Irvine. Derek Johnson scored 24 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and had 4 assists to lead the Knights.

Santa Ana 55, University 44--Eric Turner scored 14 points in only his second game since joining the team after the football season to lead the Saints. Darrell Bailey added 13 for Santa Ana; Bobby Joyce had 12 rebounds.

Fountain Valley 52, Irvine 49--Todd Hanson scored 20 points to lead the Barons (5-2) at Irvine. Hanson received help from team mate Kevin Waite, who had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Costa Mesa 60, Santiago 53--Mitch Pelichowski led all scorers with 23 points to pace the Mustangs at Irvine. Tom Morris added 15 for the Mustangs. Rick Burns had 18 to lead Santiago.

North Riverside 58, Saddleback 57--Bryant Walton led all scorers with 18 points, but Saddleback couldn’t hold off North Riverside.

Woodbridge 77, Orange 45--Mike Murphy and Mike Sullivan each scored 18 points for Woodbridge to offset Dave Ross’ 18 for Orange at Woodbridge.

In Fullerton Tournament action:

Valencia 42, Buena Park 41--Buena Park outscored Valencia, 15-4, in the fourth quarter but couldn’t catch the Tigers in the first-round game.

In the La Quinta Tournament:

El Modena 72, Bolsa Grande 70--Jason Hamline led the Vanguards with 22 points in a first-round game. El Modena was down by 4 points with a minute to go but scored the last 6 points of the game.

Edison 68, Lakewood 59--Senior forward Chris Cole scored 18 points, hitting 7 of 12 shots from the floor and 4 of 5 from the free-throw line, to spark Edison.

In nonleague action:

Long Beach Wilson 53, Huntington Beach 52 (2 OT)--Sunny Reynolds sank a free throw with 3 seconds left in the second overtime to give the Bruins the win at Huntington Beach.
