Chavez Is Awarded a Technical Victory

Julio Cesar Chavez of Mexico scored a technical victory over Jeff Bumpus of Elkhart, Ind., Thursday night at the Olympic Auditorium.

The fight was stopped in the fifth round after Chavez (47-0) received a cut on his left eyebrow when butted by Bumpus (23-4). Chavez, the World Boxing Council junior-lightweight champion, was ahead on all cards and thus was awarded the victory in the non-title bout.
