Area Basketball Roundup : Samuelson Keys Win for Chapman

Chapman College got 22 points from Jon Samuelson and 13 from Mike Kelly to defeat Sacramento State, 75-67, Friday night in a nonconference men’s basketball game at Sacramento.

The Panthers (6-4) took the lead, 6-4, on a basket by Karl Tompkins at the three-minute mark and didn’t trail after that.

Chapman made 25 of 29 free throws in the game. The Panthers made 19 free throws in a row at one point, making the last 10 in the first half and the first nine in the second half. The Panthers were also hot from the field, shooting 54%.

Three times in the second half the Panthers opened up leads of 16 points, but the Hornets came back on six straight baskets by Tony Martin (14 points). Sacramento drew to within 7, 63-56, with 12 minutes left in the second half, but the Panthers kept making free throws and opened up the lead again to as many as 16 points before winning by 8.

Sacramento is 6-2.

Cypress 56, Santa Monica 48--Bill Dobbs scored 12 points for the Chargers in the championship semifinal game as the Chargers (8-3) won their seventh straight. Dobbs scored a big basket with 2:35 remaining after Santa Monica had closed to within one at 49-48 with 3:16 left. Jeff Martineau, who had 10 points for Cypress, made it 54-48 by sinking two free throws with 20 seconds left to put the game out of reach.

Orange Coast 100, East Los Angeles 68--Every player on the Orange Coast roster scored as the Pirates (5-5) snapped a five-game losing streak in the nonconference game at OCC. Fred Bickett, brother of Indianapolis Colts’ linebacker Dwayne Bickett, came off the bench to pace Orange Coast with 15 points and 6 rebounds.

Orange Coast shot 55 percent, making 46 of 84 from the field, and outrebounded East LA (0-8), 50-30. In addition to Bickett, four players scored in double figures for the Pirates. Scott Clements scored 14; Jon Johnston had 12 points and 8 assists; Chuck McGavran had 11 points along with 6 assists and 4 steals; and Joe Seager added 10 points and 10 rebounds.
