Boys’ Roundup : Pelichowski Leads With 40 Points, but Capistrano Valley Easily Wins

Costa Mesa High School guard Mitch Pelichowski scored 40 points, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Mustangs lost to Capistrano Valley, 103-53, Thursday in the first round of the Orange Tournament at the Hutton Sports Center.

Capistrano Valley (8-1) established a tournament record with 103 points. The total broke the previous mark of 99 points set by Foothill in 1981. Pelichowski’s point total was the fifth-highest in 20 years of tournament play.

The Cougars opened a 29-6 lead in the first quarter as point guard Nathan Call scored 9 of his 21 points in the opening 8 minutes of play. Reserve John Davey added 16 points for the Cougars.

Fountain Valley 44, El Modena 39--The Barons advanced to the second round against Capistrano Valley despite making only 10 of 30 free-throw attempts. Kevin Waite and Todd Hanson each scored 11 points for Fountain Valley while El Modena’s Ryan Rycraw led all scorers with 15 points.

Dana Hills 44, Foothill 40--The Dolphins scored the biggest upset of the first round as forward Dave Cmelak scored 14 points and guard Eddie Esteban added 10. Foothill, winners of the San Clemente Tournament, was led by Dave Rasmussen with 13 points.

Marina 71, Orange JV 42--Sophomore Steve Guild scored 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Vikings past the junior varsity Panthers in the first round. Junior guard Mike Myers was the high scorer for either team with 22 points. Teammate William Quinn added 10 points for Marina (8-3), who will play Dana Hills in the second round today.

Santa Clara 62, Westminster 44--The Saints, defending CIF Southern Section 2-A champions, defeated the Lions to advance into the second round. Andy Bock led the balanced attack with 13 points. Junior guard Tom Deaver was the leading scorer for the Lions, who will play Loara in consolation play today. Santa Clara plays host Orange.

Orange 48, Loara 23--The host Panthers (3-4) advanced to the second round with an easy win over the Saxons. Orange played tough defense, limiting Loara to less than 10 points in three quarters. Seniors Mark Holmen and Dave Roth each scored 14 points to lead Orange (3-4) into the second round.

Saddleback 62, Lakewood 54--Senior guard Bryant Walton scored 27 points to lead the Roadrunners past the Lancers in the opening round. Saddleback broke a 14-14 tie after one quarter and outscored the Lancers, 12-4, in the second to take a 26-16 halftime lead and hung on to win. Milton Robinson, a junior center, led Lakewood with 20 points.

Mater Dei 75, Los Angeles Jordan 59--The Monarchs took advantage of their superior height to win their 38th straight game over two years and 9th straight this season. Jordan had no starters taller than 6-feet 4-inches. Mater Dei countered with 6-10 LeRon Ellis (20 points) and 6-9 Stuart Thomas (16 points). Ellis and Thomas combined for 30 of Mater Dei’s 43 first-half points as the Monarchs took early control. Van Meyers hit for 33 points, mostly from outside.

Newport Harbor 53, Reno 39--The Sailors advanced to the second round with a victory over the Huskies. It was the fourth straight win for Newport Harbor (5-3). Senior guard Maurice Lee scored 11 points while teammate Wes Torell was the high scorer with 14 points. He also had 12 rebounds.
