Girls’ Roundup : Mater Dei Ends Marina Winning Streak

The Marina High School girls’ basketball team had its six-game winning streak snapped by Mater Dei, 59-50, Thursday in the championship quarterfinals of the Marina-Edison Tournament.

The Vikings (8-2) led, 29-27, at halftime, but the Monarch press finally got the better of them in the second half. Mater Dei (10-3) got 21 points from Hallie Formaneck and 16 from Noelle Manfree. Heather Kirkup had 16 points for Marina.

In other Marina-Edison Tournament action:

Fountain Valley 65, El Toro 53--The Barons (9-1) trailed by one point at the end of the first quarter but picked up momentum to advance to the semifinals. Fountain Valley’s Jackie Cook had 25 points. Karen Nickel added 20 points for El Toro (5-2).

Franklin (Seattle) 50, Esperanza 41--In a championship quarterfinal, the Aztecs were beaten for only the second time in 10 games this season. Franklin (5-1) was helped by high school All-American Shannon Smith, who had 23 points.

Foothill 71, Edison 49--The Knights (4-1) beat the Chargers (10-2) to advance to the semifinals as Becky Sullivan had 24 points and 17 rebounds. Chris McFerson, who plans to attend Northwestern next year, added 19 points and 17 rebounds.

Savanna 36, Long Beach Wilson 19--Venetta Dorlis led Savanna (4-6) past the Bruins (0-8) in the consolation quarterfinals with 12 points.

Orange 54, Huntington Beach 38--Debbie Kerr scored 24 points and Suzette Sargeant added 15 for the Panthers (4-5) in the consolation quarterfinal. The Oilers are 5-4.

Corona del Mar 32, Loara 30--Michelle Willard, a 6-foot 3-inch sophomore, scored 21 points, including 14 in the second half as the Sea Kings (3-5) edged the Saxons (1-5) to advance to consolation semifinals.

Los Alamitos 82, Laguna Hills 18--The Griffins (4-2) had six players score in double figures in the consolation quarterfinals. Sophomore Jennifer Ensley, who is 6-4, led the team with 20 points, including 14 in the second half. The Hawks dropped to 1-6.

In the La Puente Tournament:

La Habra 62, La Puente 55--Sophomore forward Robin Seabrook continued her fine season with 21 points and 17 rebounds as the Highlanders advanced to Saturday’s championship game. Bridgette Austin added 17 points, Deanna Stafford 13 and Michelle Reeves 9 for La Habra. The Highlanders (6-4) will next play the winner of today’s game between Montebello and Walnut.

In the Ontario Tournament:

Whittier Christian 60, Duarte 27--Center Cindy Vyskocil scored 21 points and recorded a personal-record 21 rebounds in the second-round game. The Heralds’ Rechelle Siemens added 16 points and Toya Ellis had 14 points and 14 rebounds. The Heralds (3-1) will play Don Lugo in the semifinal at 6 tonight.
