Clipper Management Should Give Coaches an Escapegoat Clause

The wolves are definitely at Chaney’s door. And they come in the persons of Clipper owner Donald Sterling and General Manager Carl Scheer.

These two gentlemen wrecked a team that looked in the early season as if it had some promise. They refused to pay Norm Nixon what he wanted, and was worth, given the going price for good point guards in the NBA. When Nixon finally came to terms, things had already gone downhill.

They continued to cry about being “cheated” in the Marques Johnson trade. They traded James Donaldson, who despite his game flaws, gave them some stability at center. In his place, they choose to with an untested rookie who at best may be a “project.”

This would be an untenable situation for most seasoned coaches, let alone a rookie coach who is still learning. If Chaney gets the boot, he has nothing to feel ashamed of. He gave it his best. Pity, the same couldn’t be said for the owners.
