Miami Women Beat San Diego State in Orange Bowl Tournament
Maria Rivera scored 23 points and had 9 assists Sunday night to lead the University of Miami to an 88-51 win over San Diego State in the first round of the Orange Bowl tournament in Coral Gables, Fla.
The Hurricanes led, 46-22, at halftime and cruised to the victory despite a fine shooting performance by the Aztecs’ Shelda Arceneaux, who scored 16 points on 8 of 9 shooting from the field. San Diego State (4-3) will meet 11th-ranked Penn State in a losers’ bracket game today.
Miami will take on No. 6 Northeast Louisiana (5-1), a 76-66 winner over Penn State, in today’s semifinals. The other semifinal will pit No. 1 Texas (6-0) against No. 8 Mississippi (10-1). Texas beat Rutgers, 81-63, and Mississippi knocked off West Virginia, 86-66, in first round games on Sunday.
