Most Schools Cheat, Say College Officials in a National Survey
College presidents, coaches and athletic directors, answering a newspaper’s questionnaire, said cheating on NCAA rules is widespread and recommended that coaches caught in major violations be fired.
The Atlanta Journal and Constitution, which published the results in today’s combined editions, said 61% of those responding believe at least half of the nation’s major colleges and universities break NCAA recruiting rules.
And 84% said a head coach whose program is found guilty of a major violation of NCAA rules should be dismissed.
The newspapers sent 598 questionnaires to the presidents, athletic directors and head football coaches of Division 1-A schools and to the head basketball coaches of Division I schools.
About 40%, or 240 of the recipients, responded. Not all questionnaires were filled out completely.
