A New Jersey state police investigation has cleared New York Giants punter Sean Landeta of charges he tried to scalp two tickets for the team’s wild-card playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Larry McClure, the Bergen County prosecutor, said Landeta was never formally charged with any wrongdoing. The prosecutor criticized James Barry Jr., director of the state Division of Consumer Affairs, for announcing the allegations before the investigation was completed.

“Criminal allegations cannot be based on indirect information or on information by people who want to remain anonymous,” McClure said.

Consumer Affairs spokesman George Danco said a fan, on whose statements the allegations were based, had changed his story. Barry had charged that the fan reported seeing Landeta outside the Meadowlands sports complex box office on Dec. 29, offering two tickets to the game for $50 apiece--twice the regular price.

A state police official told The Record of Hackensack that the same fan told investigators that Landeta sold the tickets at their face value of $25. Landeta had maintained that he did not inflate the price of the tickets.
