SNYDER WILL HOST KABC AFTERNOON TALK SHOW

Tom Snyder, who joined KABC-TV Channel 7 in October as a special correspondent, will begin hosting a local afternoon talk show Feb. 3.

The series, “Tom Snyder,” will preempt the station’s local “Three Three O” series from 3 to 4 p.m. on weekdays during February, a KABC spokeswoman said. It’s a trial run that could lead to a full-time series, she said.

Snyder hosted a late-night talk show, “The Tomorrow Show,” for NBC from 1973 to 1982.

FULL CIRCLE: Warren Olney is returning to KCBS Channel 2. After a 4 1/2-year stint at KABC Channel 7, the seasoned broadcast journalist is joining the CBS-owned station Monday as a reporter and political editor.

Olney, 48, worked at the station from 1969 to 1975 as Sacramento bureau chief and later as political editor and weekend anchor. He moved to KNBC Channel 4 in 1975, working for six years as an investigative reporter and weekend anchor.

CELEBRATION: Today is the 34th anniversary of “Today.”

For trivia buffs, NBC says this will be Broadcast No. 8,832 of the early morning information show. That does not include nine reruns that were telecast during a strike in 1967.

The “Today” show will take to the road several times this year. It will be broadcast from New Orleans on Jan. 24 and 26 in conjunction with NBC’s coverage of Super Bowl XX, then will be in Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires the week of Feb. 10-14. A cruise aboard the cruise ship Norway is scheduled for the week of May 19-23, with stops at several East Coast ports.

NEW SERIES: CBS has pegged Jan. 28 as the premiere date for “Melba,” a new situation comedy starring Melba Moore. It will air Tuesdays at 8 p.m.

On the same date, “Charlie & Company,” the first-year comedy series starring Flip Wilson and Gladys Knight, will move from Wednesdays to Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m.

Moore will play Melba Patterson, the director of the visitors center in New York City and the divorced mother of a 9-year-old daughter, to be portrayed by Jamila Perry. Other members of the cast include Lou Jacobi and Evan Mirand as Moore’s assistants, Barbara Meek as her mother and Gracie Harrison as a friend from childhood.

“Melba” and “Charlie & Company” will fill the Tuesday night slot that CBS has been plugging with specials since canceling “Hometown” earlier this season.
