Victorian Mansion Damaged in Blaze

A Victorian mansion built about 1880 and owned by an 89-year-old doctor was heavily damaged in an early morning fire Saturday that caused a loss of $250,000 to $350,000, Los Angeles fire officials said.

The fire started about 4 a.m. in either the basement or on the first floor of the home at 4000 N. Figueroa St. in the Montecito Heights area.

Dr. Bertha Foler, who said she has lived at the home since 1924 and bought it in 1947, escaped unhurt, although she was unable to leave her yard until firefighters cut the lock of her gate.

Foler said the fire destroyed her player piano and furniture that had been in her family for years. Her Model A Ford survived, she said, because it was in a garage away from the fire.

Fire officials estimated damage to the contents at $50,000 and damage to the structure at $200,000 to $300,000. Cause of the fire was being investigated.
