The State : Quake Jolts Large Area

A strong earthquake shook Central California, but there were no reports of damage or injuries. The state Office of Emergency Services said the temblor registered 4.9 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter near Hollister, a small East Bay farming town about 60 miles southeast of San Francisco. The temblor was felt at the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, 170 miles south of the epicenter. A spokesman for the Pacific Gas & Electric Co. said there was no damage to the facility, but the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission was notified. The PG&E; official said the Unit 1 reactor was allowed to continue operating at full power.
