Monterey Park : Free Bus Service on Way
The City Council has awarded a three-year, $1.14-million contract to Community Transit Services to provide free bus service to residents of Monterey Park. The service is expected to begin within 90 days.
David Bentz, director of management services for the city, said that the firm will operate five buses. Five routes through the commercial district have been proposed to the City Council but final action has not been taken. The service is being funded by revenue from Proposition A, which imposed a half-cent county sales tax in 1982 to raise funds for transportation services.
Community Transit Services, based in Santa Ana, was the lower of two bidders and offered a choice between two types of buses. Bentz said the council decided on a vehicle that looks like a San Francisco cable car. The buses will seat about 20 passengers each.
