Candidate Filing for April 8 Election Closes in 7 Cities
Eleven South Bay cities are scheduled to hold municipal elections April 8, and the candidates in seven of the races were determined when the deadline for filing passed on Thursday.
In fact, the winners were already known in two cities. In Palos Verdes Estates, no one challenged incumbent Mayor James Kinney or City Council members Edward Ritscher and Ruth Gralow. In Rolling Hills, incumbents Gordana Swanson, Ginney Leeuwenburgh and Jody Murdoch also drew no opposition.

In a Feb. 2 article, The Times incorrectly stated that H. Robert Wilson of Gardena was a candidate in that city’s mayoral race in April. Wilson took out nomination papers in January but never filed them with the Gardena city clerk. Incumbent Mayor Donald Dear will run unopposed.
The article also omitted the name of Dr. Ollie B. Hadley’s name as a candidate for Gardena City Council. The incorrect information was supplied by the Gardena city clerk’s office.
In Hawthorne, three candidates are seeking to fill the City Council post left vacant when Betty Ainsworth was elected mayor in November: Ginny McGinnis Lambert, Larry Guyer and Richard Mansfield.
In Gardena, voters will choose a mayor and two council members. Incumbent Mayor Donald Dear is opposed by H. Robert Wilson. In the council races, incumbents Gwen Duffy and Mas Fukai are being challenged by Arthur L. Johnson and Terence Kennedy.
In Carson, eight candidates are running for two council seats, including incumbents Thomas G. Mills and Sylvia L. Muise. The other candidates are Duncan A. Sillers, Timothy T. Williams Jr., Michael I. Mitoma, Harris S. Williams, Gaddis Farmer and Franklin E. Goff.
El Segundo voters will elect two council members. The incumbents, Charles (Chip) Armstrong and Le Synadinos, are challenged by Harry Robert Anderson, Alan West and Robert H. Stull.
Two council positions are at stake in Avalon where both incumbents, W. F. (Oley) Olsen III and Irene L. Stroebel, are seeking reelection. Other candidates are Roger C. Cadman, Hal Host and Hal Starr.
In four cities--Lawndale, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Lomita--the slate of candidates will not be final until Tuesday. State law extends the filing five days when an incumbent does not seek reelection.
In Lawndale, voters will chose a mayor, a council member and a city clerk. Incumbent Mayor Sarann Kruse will run against James D. Ramsey, who is currently on the City Council.
No incumbents are seeking reelection in the other Lawndale races.
Candidates for Ramsey’s council post so far are Virginia Rhodes and Larry Rudolph. Gary McDonald and Neil Roth are running for the city clerk’s position left vacant when Joyce South moved out of town.
Three city council seats are open in Hermosa Beach. The candidates are incumbents Jack Wood and George Barks and challengers Etta Simpson and June Williams. Incumbent Gary Brutsch is not seeking reelection.
In Manhattan Beach, two council seats will be on the ballot and neither of the incumbents, Russ Lesser and Jim Walker, is seeking reelection. The candidates are Mike Collins, Geraldine (Gerry) Johnson, Laurence Dougharty, Tim Lilligren, Bruce S. Ponder, and Connie Sieber.
Three council positions are open in Lomita. Incumbents Robert Hargrave, 47, and Harold Hall, 76, are running for reelection, but incumbent Leonard Loy did not file by the deadline. The only other candidate as of Thursday was Peter J. Rossick.
