An early morning fire severely damaged nine units in a two-story apartment complex at 755 N. Sunset Ave. in West Covina. There were no injuries. West Covina Battalion Chief James A. Schieldge estimated damage at about $200,000. Initially, Schieldge said, about 300 tenants had to be evacuated from the complex’s 141 units by police who went door to door awakening residents. Fire officials said the blaze started in a second-floor apartment, but could not immediately pinpoint the cause. Thirty residents of the nine badly damaged units were temporarily housed in a nearby church.
