Orange County Girls’ Basketball : Savanna Contains Carter, Tops Magnolia

The Savanna High School girls’ basketball team avenged a two-point loss to Magnolia earlier this season by beating the Sentinels, 66-50, in Orange League play at Magnolia Tuesday.

The Rebels used a diamond-and-one defense, with Deeann Shephard assigned to contain the Sentinels’ Michelle Carter.

Carter, who averages 31 points per game, was held to 19 points Tuesday, including only 8 points and one field goal in the second half.

Najala Koury scored 23 points and Shephard added 20 to lead the Rebels. Venetta Dorlis added 18 points and Tammy Burns had 12 rebounds for the Rebels.

Dawn Borum scored 16 points for the Sentinels.

Savanna raised its record to 4-3 in league and 11-11 overall. Magnolia fell to 5-2 and 13-8.

In other Orange League games:

Brea-Olinda 74, Western 30--Carrie Egan scored 17 points and Kristen Blair added 14 as the Wildcats (7-0, 19-3) won at Brea. Susan Tousey of Brea contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds. Brea’s diamond-and-one defensive scheme held Pioneer star Melanie Williams, who averages 24 points a game, to just 8. Western fell to 1-6.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 56, Ocean View 55--Martha Noffsinger’s 20-foot jump shot at the buzzer lifted the Chargers to the win over the Seahawks at Edison. The Chargers were down by 14 points going into the fourth quarter but outscored the Seahawks, 23-8, the rest of the way.

Kristen Wilson led the Chargers (4-3, 17-6) with 18 points. Dalene Lawson led the Seahawks (3-4, 12-9) with 15. Ocean View had beaten Edison seven consecutive times before Tuesday.

Fountain Valley 56, Marina 31--Susan Walin scored 21 points and Dawn Lawler added 15 to lead the Barons to the win at Fountain Valley. Liberty Brewster and Heather Kirkup scored 10 points apiece for the Vikings. Fountain Valley (7-0, 19-4) is at Westminster Thursday. Marina’s record fell to 2-5 and 12-9.

Huntington Beach 49, Westminster 41--Allyson Hartman’s 21 points led the Oilers to the win at Huntington Beach. Jeannine Battaglia scored 25 points for the Lions. Huntington Beach raised its record to 3-4 and 11-11. Westminster fell to 2-5 and 10-8.

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 54, Buena Park 42--Junior guard Kerri Towles scored 15 points as the Lancers beat the Coyotes at Buena Park. Catherine Stedman scored 13 points and junior forward Nancy Bates added 11 for Sunny Hills (2-5). Cheryl Hamda scored 13 points for Buena Park (0-7).

La Habra 53, Sonora 26--Robin Seabrook scored 22 points to lead the Highlanders at La Habra. Toni Hayes scored 10 points for the Raiders. La Habra (7-0, 17-4) plays host to Fullerton Thursday. Sonora’s league record fell to 1-6.

Fullerton 53, Troy 46--Vicki Silva scored 19 points and Heidi Shikuma added 18 to lead the Indians at Fullerton. Sue Guest led the Warriors with 16 points. Fullerton (6-1, 15-4) is at La Habra Thursday.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 62, Bishop Montgomery 21--Debbie Wagner scored 15 points to lead the Monarchs at Mater Dei. Janet Rensing and Kim Ellerman scored 11 points apiece for the Monarchs. Julie Moller led Bishop Montgomery with 12 points. Mater Dei (8-0, 18-7) is at St. Joseph’s Thursday. A win there will give the Monarchs the league championship.

In the Century League:

Foothill 64, El Modena 21--Chris McPherson scored 13 points and Felice Geddy added 12 to lead the Knights at Foothill. Barbie Olson scored 15 points for the Vanguards. Foothill raised its record to 11-0 and 21-1. El Modena’s record fell to 3-8 and 16-13.

Tustin 69, Santa Ana 20--The Tillers won easily at Tustin. The Tillers play host to Villa Park Thursday while Santa Ana will host Orange.

Villa Park 56, Orange 54--The Spartans edged the Panthers at Villa Park. The Panthers are at Santa Ana.

In the South Coast League:

Irvine 48, Capistrano Valley 44--The Vaqueros outscored the Cougars, 16-6, in the fourth quarter to overcome a six-point deficit. Shelly Moceri led Irvine (6-4) with 16 points. Cindy Edwards added 13. Julie Swain’s 13 points led Capistrano Valley (5-5).

In the Empire League:

Los Alamitos 39, Kennedy 34--Jennifer Ensley had 14 points and Diane Sands added 9 as the Griffins (10-1, 17-4) won at Los Alamitos. Ursula Lovely, who finished with 16 points, was the only player in double figures for Kennedy (1-10, 2-15).

Esperanza 78, El Dorado 59--Sharon Warmus’ 30 points and Laura Jones’ 24 led the Aztecs at Esperanza. Jones added 7 rebounds, 9 assists and 6 steals as Esperanza improved to 10-1 in league, 17-4 overall. Kathy Newvine had 24 points and Jill Matyuch had 12 to lead El Dorado (7-4).

In the Olympic League:

Valley Christian 58, Orange Lutheran 31--Kari Parriott scored 27 points to lead the Crusaders at Orange Lutheran. Michelle Boltz scored 11 points for the Lancers. Orange Lutheran fell to 3-8 and 7-11.
