College Baseball Roundup : Eccles Leads Titans Past Broncos, 5-4

Catcher John Eccles had a pair of doubles and drove in two runs Friday to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 5-4 win over Cal Poly Pomona in a nonconference baseball game at Pomona.

Eccles drove in two runs with a first-inning double and doubled again in the sixth to set up the Titans’ go-ahead run. Alan Stankiewicz followed with a double to give the Titans a 4-3 lead and Mark Razook singled in Stankiewicz with two outs for the Titans’ final run.

Right-hander Dave Serrano, a transfer from Cerritos College, picked up the win in relief for Fullerton (2-1) in his first decision. Serrano, who entered the game with one out in the first, went the next 7 innings and gave up just one run while striking out three and walking three. Mike Munoz went the distance for the Broncos (0-5) and took the loss.

The Titans host Pomona today at 1 p.m.

USC 8, UC Irvine 2--Kaha Wong tripled in two runs and Al Dillasenor drove in one with a double as the Trojans defeated the Anteaters at Irvine. Steve Bast, who pitched the first three innings for USC, was the winner. Irvine’s Gabby Rodriguez gave up five earned runs in 5 innings and took the loss. Gene Roumimper, a transfer from Orange Coast College, led the Anteaters (2-1) with two hits and two RBIs.

Irvine plays at USC today at 11 a.m..

UCLA 8, Chapman 0--Jeff Conine threw a four-hit shutout and struck out seven to lead the Bruins past the Panthers in a game that was called after seven innings because of rain at UCLA. First baseman John Joslyn led UCLA’s 11-hit attack with a double and a two-run home run. Steve Hisey added a pinch-hit home run in the seventh inning, giving the Bruins (2-1) six home runs in three games. Starter John Hulshof (0-1) pitched four innings and suffered the loss for the Panthers (0-2).
