College Baseball : Cal State Fullerton Stays Unbeaten, Wins 8-2

Cal State Fullerton’s baseball team improved to 3-0 in nonconference play Saturday with an 8-2 win over Cal Poly Pomona.

The Titans took the lead in the first on a three-run home run by John Eccles. Alan Stankiewicz also hit a home run Saturday, as Fullerton banged out 12 hits against Pomona (0-6).

Stankiewicz and Jef Garcia each had three hits for Fullerton.

Starting pitcher Gilbert Villanueva struck out 14 for the Titans in his seven innings. Dean Yamashita pitched the final two innings, earning the save.

Fullerton will play an alumni team at 1 p.m. today and will face San Diego State at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

In other college baseball action:

UC Irvine 9, USC 7--The Anteaters rallied for four runs in the ninth inning to come from behind at Dedeaux Field. Catcher Doug Kline capped the comeback with his second double of the day, knocking in Tom Baine and Mike Fay.

After USC took a 7-3 lead in the fourth inning, UCI pitchers Brett Martin and Doug Linton shut down the Trojans. Linton came on in the seventh inning and picked up the victory. The nonconference win gave UCI a 3-1 record, while USC fell to 3-2.

Christ College Irvine 12-5, Caltech 4-2--The Crusaders got good pitching and hitting to sweep the doubleheader in Pasadena. Perry Miller tossed a five-hitter in the opener and had eight strikeouts. In the nightcap John Shimkus allowed only six hits and had eight strikeouts.

Steve Hantula was Christ College’s hitting star. His two-run home run capped an eight-run seventh inning in the first game and he went 3 for 4 in the second game. Eric Williams added a double, a home run and four runs batted in for the Crusaders in the second game.

Chapman College’s nonconference doubleheader at UC San Diego was postponed because of rain.
