ORANGE COUNTY GIRLS’ BASKETBALL : Edison Surprises Fountain Valley, 55-51, in Overtime

Michelle Hennessey and Denise Ogburn each scored three points in overtime Tuesday night to lead the Edison High School girls’ basketball team to a 55-51 upset over Fountain Valley in a Sunset League game played at Fountain Valley.

It marked the first league loss in two seasons for Fountain Valley, which played without one of its top players, Melissa Handley, who was suffering from strep throat.

Ogburn and Martha Noffsinger each scored 17 points for the Chargers, who improved to 6-3 in league and 19-6 overall. Dawn Lawler scored 22 points for the Barons, who dropped to 8-1 in league, 21-5 overall.

In other Sunset League action:

Ocean View 48, Huntington Beach 28--Trina Vlachos scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Dalene Lawson added 15 points to help the Seahawks past the Oilers at Ocean View. Dana Douty added 9 assists, 5 steals and 5 rebounds for the Seahawks, who improved to 5-4 in league and 14-9 overall. Stephanie Pemper scored 10 points for Huntington Beach, which dropped to 3-6.

Westminster 42, Marina 33--Devon Akita scored 15 points and Shannon Bates added 11 to lead the Lions (3-6, 10-9) past the Vikings (2-7, 12-11) at Marina High. Dawn Charroin scored 11 points for the Vikings.

In Empire League action:

El Dorado 60, Los Alamitos 46--Jill Matyuch scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Golden Hawks to the upset over the Griffins at El Dorado High. Los Alamitos (11-2 in league) fell into a first-place tie with Esperanza. El Dorado, which received 19 points from Kathy Newvine, improved to 8-5 league, 13-6 overall.

The Golden Hawks led by four points (43-39) entering the fourth period but outscored the Griffins, 17-7, in the final quarter to turn the game into a rout. Kelly Moore and Diane Sands each scored 12 points for Los Alamitos.

Esperanza 66, Loara 41--Sharon Warmus scored 23 points to help the Aztecs defeat the Saxons at Loara High. The win gave Esperanza (11-2, 18-5) a share of first place with Los Alamitos. Carolyn Osato scored 19 points to lead the Saxons (4-9).

Katella 54, Cypress 39--Serenda Zaldez scored 19 points and Julie Stander added 14 to help the Knights defeat the Centurions at Cypress High. Katella (10-3 in league, 17-3 overall) is in third place; the Centurions, who were led by Nicky Luce’s 12 points, dropped to 6-7 and 12-11.

Kennedy 54, Pacifica 33--Ursela Lovely scored 29 points to lead the Irish past the Mariners at Pacifica High. Kennedy improved to 2-11 in league, 3-16 overall, while the Mariners dropped to 0-13.

In Sea View League action:

Corona del Mar 39, Costa Mesa 38--Michelle Willard scored 18 points and grabbed 25 rebounds to lead the Sea Kings past the Mustangs at Costa Mesa High. Corona del Mar (12-1 league, 15-8 overall) remains in a first-place tie with Woodbridge. The Mustangs (8-5, 13-10) trailed, 30-23, entering the fourth period and almost pulled off the upset.

Woodbridge 41, University 22--Kathy Millat scored 13 points and set a school record with 13 steals to lead the Warriors past the Trojans at University High. Diana Zilko was the game’s leading scorer with 18 points for Woodbridge (12-1, 18-6). The Trojans fell to 0-13 and 2-18.

Estancia 41, Saddleback 39--Shawna Newbern made a baseline jump shot with six seconds left to lift the Eagles past the Roadrunners at Estancia High. Leslie Self scored 11 points for Estancia (6-7, 8-13). Saddleback dropped to 6-7 in league.

In Orange League action:

Brea-Olinda 81, Savanna 41--Susan Tousey and Carrie Egan each scored 18 points at Savanna High, as the Wildcats clinched their fourth straight league championship. Brea-Olinda improved to 9-0 in league and 21-3 overall, and has a 38-game win streak in league play. The Rebels drop to 5-4.

Valencia 66, Magnolia 65--Steffi Strauss scored 19 points and Kimari Kubota added 16 to help the Tigers defeat the Sentinels at Valencia High. Michelle Carter scored a game-high 34 points to lead second-place Magnolia (6-3, 14-8).

In Freeway League action:

La Habra 53, Troy 31--Robin Seabrook scored 33 points and Bridgette Austin added 12 as the Highlanders (9-0, 20-4) swept past the Warriors (4-5) at Troy High. La Habra was playing without its starting guards, Michelle Reeves and Diana Stafford, who both had knee surgeries in the last week. Troy led after one quarter, 8-6, but La Habra got its running game moving and built a 23-17 halftime lead.

Fullerton 54, Sunny Hills 49--Noelle Heusser scored 17 points and Vicki Silva added 12 to lead the second-place Indians past the Lancers at Sunny Hills High. Fullerton improved to 7-2 in league and 16-6 overall. Catherine Stedman scored 13 points for Sunny Hills.

In South Coast League action:

Capistrano Valley 61, Laguna Hills 36--Caylin Combs scored 26 points and Heather Schoeny added 19 to lead the Cougars past the Hawks at Capistrano Valley High. The Cougars improved to 6-6 in league, 13-8 overall. Laguna Hills dropped to 3-8 in league.

San Clemente 36, Dana Hills 32--Lynn Kristofferson scored 10 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead the Tritons past the Dolphins at San Clemente High.

In Angelus League action:

Mater Dei 68, Bishop Amat 36--The Monarchs defeated the Lancers at Mater Dei to finish undefeated in league play for the third straight year. Debbie Wagner scored 14 points and Hallie Formaneck added 12 for the Monarchs, who finished the regular season at 10-0 league, 20-7 overall, and have won four straight league titles.

In Century League action:

Foothill 76, Canyon 26--Stephanie Fleischaker scored 22 points and Chris McFerson added 14 to lead the Knights to an easy win over the Comanches at Canyon High. Foothill (13-0, 23-1) has won 22 straight games since losing to Esperanza in the second game of the season. Canyon fell to 6-7 and 11-9.

In Olympic League action:

Maranatha 44, Orange Lutheran 36--Tammy Fleury scored 12 points to lead the Minutemen past the Lancers at Orange Lutheran High. Suzanne Bragg led the Lancers (3-10, 7-13) with 12 points.

In Garden Grove League action:

Garden Grove 57, Los Amigos 52--The Argonauts defeated the Lobos at Los Amigos High.
