Foothill Beats Tustin to Finish Another Perfect Century League Season

Foothill High School made 29 of 55 free throws Thursday night and edged rival Tustin, 57-45, in a physical Century League girls’ basketball game at Foothill.

The victory gave the Knights a 14-0 league record and a 24-1 mark overall. Foothill has won 42 straight league games and has gone unbeaten in league three straight years.

Against Tustin the Knights took advantage of 37 Tiller fouls. Chris McFerson paced the Knights with 21 points. Stephanie Fleischaker added 16 points and Felice Geddy chipped in with 11 points. Tricia Anders led Tustin (10-4, 14-8) with 12 points.

In Empire League action:

Esperanza 50, Kennedy 38--Sharon Warmus scored 22 points and had 8 rebounds to lead the Aztecs (12-2, 19-5) at Kennedy. Ursula Lovely scored 16 to lead the Irish (2-12).

El Dorado 89, Pacifica 26--Jill Matyuch had a career-high 39 points along with 12 assists, 17 rebounds and 8 steals for the Golden Hawks. She was 14 of 18 from floor and 11 of 12 from the free throw line. Cathy Newvine added 21 points for El Dorado.

In Freeway League action:

Fullerton 50, Sonora 38--The Indians clinched second place with an 8-2 record. Their only losses were to league champion La Habra. Vickie Silva paced Fullerton with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Heidi Shikuma had with 14 points and Lisa Barry had 10. Toni Hayes had 10 points and 13 rebounds for host Sonora, which finished in fourth place at 4-6.

Troy 53, Sunny Hills 49--Jennifer McCarthy scored 22 points for the Warriors, who finished at 5-5 and in third place. Clare McKenna pulled down 13 rebounds for visiting Troy. Sunny Hills’ Kerri Towles matched McCarthy with 22 points and Catherine Stedman had 19.

La Habra 54, Buena Park 38--The Highlanders wrapped up an undefeated league season (10-0, 21-4 overall) as Robin Seabrook and Bridgitte Austin each scored 16 points. Kelly Hillard led Buena Park with a game-high 18 points.

In Garden Grove League action:

Bolsa Grande 45, Garden Grove 39--The Matadors and Argonauts finished tied for second place with 7-3 records, but Bolsa Grande will be the league’s No. 2 playoff team because it defeated Garden Grove twice. The Matadors came from 14 points down to gain the win.

In Olympic League action:

Brethren 72, Orange Lutheran 44--Michelle Warner had 35 points for Brethren. Michelle Boltz and Jill Trenschel had 10 each for Orange Lutheran (4-10, 7-14).

In Orange League action:

Brea-Olinda 78, Magnolia 60--The Wildcats outscored the Sentinels 25-6 in the third quarter to break open what had been a close game. The win gave Brea its fourth straight league title and a 10-0 league record this season, 22-3 overall. Magnolia dropped to 6-4 and 14-9.

Magnolia’s Michelle Carter scored 28 points in the loss to set an Orange County single-season scoring record of 698 points. She broke her own record of 670, which she set last season. Brea’s Carrie Egan had a game-high 29 points.

Savanna 69, Anaheim 24--The Rebels gained their first playoff berth in three years with the lopsided win at Anaheim. Savanna (6-4, 13-12) tied Magnolia for second place behind Brea. Savanna broke out to a 21-1 first-quarter lead and the outcome was never in doubt. Along the way, the Rebels set a school single-game record with 60 rebounds and all 13 players scored. Venetta Dorlis led Savanna with 14 points and Najla Koury had 12 points. Anaheim finished at 0-10 in league play.

Valencia 61, Western 47--The Tigers’ Steffi Strauss led the way with 19 points and Ronette Sweeney contributed 16 points at Western. The Pioneers’ Melanie Williams tied Strauss for game-high honors.

In Sea View League action:

Costa Mesa 62, Newport Harbor 19--The Mustangs (9-5, 14-10) clinched third place with the victory over the Sailors in Newport Beach. Stephanie Swanson led Costa Mesa with 20 points and 3 steals. Carol Long added 16 points. Newport Harbor dropped to 2-12 and 2-19.

Corona del Mar 47, Saddleback 30--The Sea Kings finished 13-1 in league play and tied with Woodbridge for the title. Kathy Smirl scored 17 points and grabbed 7 rebounds for Corona del Mar and teammate Michele Willard had 13 points and 26 rebounds. Monica Walton had 15 points for Saddleback (8-6).

In South Coast League action:

El Toro 75, San Clemente 25--Three players scored in double figures as the Chargers routed the Tritons at San Clemente. El Toro’s Kathy Nickel led all scorers with 20 points. Jennifer Uecke added 17 points and Elaine Youngs had 10 points for the Chargers (11-1 in league play). San Clemente fell to 2-10.

In Sunset League action:

Ocean View 63, Westminster 51--The Seahawks’ Trina Vlachos scored 28 points and had 15 rebounds as Ocean View improved to 6-4 and 15-9. Shelley Straight contributed 10 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 blocked shots and 2 steals for Ocean View. Devon Akita led Westminster (3-7) with 17 points.

Edison 57, Marina 42--Denise Ogburn scored 15 points and Michelle Hennessey and Kristen Wilson added 10 each to lead the second-place Chargers (7-3, 20-6) past the Vikings at Edison. Marina finished the season 2-8 and 12-12.
