Roundup : St. Augustine Survives Hoover Rally for 43-42 Win

St. Augustine, stymied by Hoover’s defense in the fourth period, held on to win, 43-42, in a City Central League game Thursday night at St. Augustine.

The Saints led 32-24 going into the final period, but had to struggle to survive a battle for second place in front of a capacity crowd at St. Augustine.

The Cardinals had the chance to go home victors, after an errant St. Augstine pass turned over to them with three seconds remaining. Two shots in the final moments did not go in.

Charlie Applegate scored 19 points for St. Augustine (6-3 in league, 12-9 overall). Ken Matthews led Hoover (5-4, 10-13) with his 20 points.

In other City Central League action:

Christian 57, San Diego 54--Freshman center Darryl White scored on a layup with 32 seconds left to cap a brilliant comeback as Christian (3-6,12-10) won at San Diego.

The Patriots trailed, 46-27, after three quarters, but outscored San Diego, 28-8, in the final period to gain the win. Christian trailed, 50-33, with 5:53 remaining when San Diego center Shawn Perkins fouled out.

With Perkins gone, White scored 14 of his 16 points in the final quarter. Christian’s Steve Grant led all scorers with a 22 points. Perkins scored 18, Glenn Longo had 13 and Reggie Jones added 10 for San Diego (2-7, 5-13).

Lincoln 66, Crawford 63--Shelby Hall scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the third period to lead a Lincoln (9-0, 14-6) comeback from a 33-27 halftime deficit at Crawford. Most of Hall’s points came on steals as Lincoln outscored Crawford, 26-11, in that third period.

“They built up a 12-point lead,” said Crawford Coach Jim Sams, “went to the spread and held on.”

Omar McDade was second to Hall in scoring for Lincoln with 14 points. Crawford had five players in double figures, led by Paul Franklin’s 15.

CITY WESTERN Kearny 58, Clairemont 36--The Komets (7-2, 16-9) dominated throughout the game, easily handling the young Clairemont team. Kearny’s Steve Daley led all scorers with 19 points. Jason Deal led Clairemont (0-9, 1-21) with 18 points.

La Jolla 63, Mission Bay 53--The scored was 22-22 at halftime, but La Jolla (7-2, 12-5) outscored the Mission Bay, 19-6, in the third quarter to win in the loser’s gym. La Jolla’s Yancey Brown led all scorers with 23 points, including 12 in the pivotal third quarter. Mike McLachlan added 18 for the Vikings. Paul Williams scored 14 for Mission Bay (4-5, 5-13).

University 87, University City 50--The Dons led throughout the game and University’s reserves came on strong in the fourth period to seal the victory. Sean Giles and James Wilson led University (8-1, 16-7) with 20 and 18 points, respectively. University’s Harold Lewis and Rich Faber came off the bench in the final period to each score 7 points. University City drops to 1-8 in league play and 3-19 overall.

CITY EASTERN Morse 69, Madison 55--A strong full-court press and a series of steals in the second period allowed third--ranked Morse (8-1, 16-4) to pull away from the Warhawks (1-8, 10-11). The Tigers were only leading by one after the first quarter, but dominated the second and third periods to build a 51-31 lead.

Chris Jeter and Barney Laffitte had 15 and 12 points, respectively, for Morse. Madison’s Eric Jackson led all scorers with 16. Tony Blount added 12 for the Warhawks.

Point Loma 69, Patrick Henry 61--The Patriots made a late surge in the fourth period, but couldn’t overcome the Pointers. Richard Clark scored 22 points for Point Loma (5-4, 14-10) and Dale Bryant added 21 points and 13 rebounds. Ron Young paced Patrick Henry (1-8, 8-11) with 19 points.

Point Loma got off to a 19-10 lead after the first period, and the Patriots played catchup throughout the game.

GIRLS In City Central play:

Lincoln 41, Crawford 24--Pulling steadily away, Lincoln outscored Crawford in every period to cinch the championship in a showdown at Crawford.
