On ‘Negativism’ in Sports: No News Is Good News

Share

There is so much negativism in sports today that I find it offensive that The Times devoted 171.5 square inches out of 234 square inches on the front page of the Sunday (Orange County) sports section to the Ocean View recruiting of players and the Minnesota rape case. I am a teacher and former coach. Is this what we want young people seeing when they pick up the sports section?

A majority of the articles in the sports section were positive. Why are these put on the back pages? Why should alleged cheating and alleged rape take up the main headlines?

There is so much about drugs in professional sports, universities being sued by former advisers because athletes were supposedly passed through courses for the purpose of making them eligible. If you have to report these stories, please put them on Page 25 of your 24-page section, where they belong.
