A Bit More History

Share

I enjoyed Ruth Ryon’s column on the Spelling house.

May I make the following additions to the history:

It was built by Gordon Kaufman in the early ‘30s for Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm McNaughten. He was the president of The Broadway for over 25 years. His wife was Edna Letts, whose father controlled and organized Westwood Village.

Her sister Gladys was married to Harold Janss. With his brother Edwin they talked the Board of Regents of the University of California into transferring the Southern Branch to Westwood--so now we have that magnificent university and hospital.

I was born in Los Angeles over 75 years ago, and I do think its history has been fascinating.
