Backers of two rival growth initiatives on the Feb. 25 special election ballot will present their arguments to voters at two public forums this week.

San Clemente Seniors Inc. will be host to the first forum at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the San Clemente Senior Center, 242 Avenida del Mar. Councilman Scott Diehl will speak in support of Ballot Measure A, an initiative sponsored by a three-member majority of the City Council. Teddi Lorch, treasurer of the campaign group San Clementeans for Managed Growth, will represent Measure B, a spokeswoman for San Clemente Seniors said.

On Thursday, the League of Women Voters will be host to a debate at St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, 202 Avenida Aragon, at 7:30 p.m. Measure B co-author Tom Lorch will be one of the speakers, league spokeswoman Mary LaHeusen said.

The City Council-backed initiative would control growth in the backcountry by enforcing provisions of the city’s General Plan. The voter-sponsored initiative would limit backcountry construction to 500 new homes per year.
