Share

The pilot of a small aircraft died Monday evening when the plane crashed in fog on its final approach to Palomar Airport in Carlsbad. There were no passengers. Officials said they did not know where the flight originated.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman in San Diego said air traffic controllers lost radar and radio contact with the single-engine Cessna 172 aircraft shortly after 7 p.m. Carlsbad police and fire search units found the plane less than an hour later in an undeveloped area about 1 1/2 miles east of the airport.

Air traffic controllers said visibility at the time of the crash was about one-half mile. The pilot gave no indication of problems with the aircraft before controllers lost contact with him.
