Roundup : Poway Set for Playoffs After Win

Forwards Jud Buechler and Dominick Johnson combined for 63 points Tuesday night to lead the Poway High’s boys’ basketball team to a 94-60 win over visiting Orange Glen (6-5, 10-14) in Palomar League play.

Buechler scored 32 points and Johnson added 31 as Poway (11-0, 20-3) assured itself at least a share of the league title. The Titans, ranked No. 1 by The Times all season, end their season Thursday at home against No. 8 Mount Carmel, which is one game back in second place.

Poway outscored Orange Glen, 27-12, in the first quarter and led, 50-25, at halftime. The Titans shot 57% from the floor. Buechler and Johnson also combined for 30 rebounds.

Forward Steve Clinger led Orange Glen with 18 points.

GROSSMONT LEAGUE Mount Miguel 65 Santana 27--Mount Miguel (13-3, 16-7) clinched a playoff berth at home. Gus Lopez scored 18 points and Heywood Mathis added 15. Mount Miguel could tie for first if El Capitan loses Thursday to Monte Vista. Santana fell to 3-12 and 5-17).

Grossmont 76, Monte Vista 56--It was over in a matter of minutes as Grossmont (11-4, 13-6) jumped out to 47-22 halftime lead and coasted past Monte Vista (10-5, 11-10). Kerry McIntyre and Donnie Angotti led Grossmont with 20 and 18 points, respectively. Melvin McFarlin had 20 for Monte Vista.

Helix 40, Valhalla 38--Helix guard Tim Neal hit a 17-footer with two seconds remaining to give the Highlanders (9-6, 11-10) the win over Valhalla (3-12, 3-19). Eric Mobley led Helix with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Valhalla’s Dan Chase was the game’s leading scorer with 18.
