A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with a knife attack Tuesday on his father and stepmother, police said.

Police Detective Rick Christensen said the suspect, Edwin D. Moore, 27, also suffered knife wounds when his father stabbed him in self-defense.

Moore was treated at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, then transferred late Wednesday to the Orange County jail ward at UCI Medical Center, where he was booked on two counts of attempted murder, Lt. Ron Gillman said.

Also admitted to the hospital were Wayland Moore, 50, and his wife, Mary Moore, 36, who live at the same Fountain Valley address. They were listed in fair condition Wednesday with multiple lacerations and stab wounds, spokesmen said.

Police said Mary Moore telephoned officers Tuesday to report that she had been stabbed. An unidentified neighbor, who monitored police radio calls regarding the incident, was credited by officers with detaining the fleeing suspect until police arrived.

Police Detective Darryl Nance said that the suspect used a kitchen “steak knife” but that police know of no motive for the apparently “unprovoked attack” on the parents. The investigation continued Wednesday, he said.
