HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER : Calabasas Ousts St. Joseph, 3-1, in 1-A Playoff

Freshman Brian Smalarz, making his varsity debut for Calabasas High, scored a first-half goal as the Coyotes defeated St. Joseph of Santa Maria, 3-1, in a wild-card playoff.

Freshman Pete Mattson and junior Brian Sandweiss scored second-half goals for Calabasas.

Calabasas (14-5-3), seeded eighth in Southern Section 1-A, will visit Flintridge (7-8-4), seeded third, on Friday at 3 p.m.

Oak Park 3, Villanova Prep 1--Stacy Wise of Oak Park scored first on a free kick by teammate Kathy Greenhalgh in the first half of the girls 2-A wild-card playoff game. Moments later, Wise scored again on a left-side corner kick by Greenhalgh.

Freshman Heidi Ogawa scored for Oak Park at the end of the first half, giving the Eagles a 3-0 halftime lead.

Oak Park (11-5), seeded sixth in 2-A, will play at Montclair, seeded third, on Friday at 3 p.m.
