Patrick Ewing, who injured his right knee Feb. 2 against the Lakers and missed five games, said Thursday that he is resuming practice and hoped to play again within a week.

Ewing, the 7-1 rookie from Georgetown, expressed dismay not only at his injuries this season but also at the New York Knicks’ record. The Knicks (18-37), last in the NBA’s Atlantic Division, trail Cleveland by four games for the last Eastern Conference playoff spot.

“I’ve never had so many injuries in my career,” he said. “Once my body feels well, I want to play hard. Losing has been rough. I don’t want to get used to losing, and I really want to make the playoffs.”

He denied that the long NBA season is proving too demanding for him.

“No, I don’t think the longer schedule is a factor at all,” he said. “I get paid a lot of money to play hard every game, and that’s what I want to do.”
