Blaze Erupts in Unit at Chevron Refinery
A fire broke out at the Chevron El Segundo refinery Friday afternoon, sending a dense pall of black smoke heading eastward across sections of Los Angeles. The fire, according to a Chevron spokesman, broke out in a unit called the diesel furnace hydrofiner and was believed caused by a tube rupture within the furnace.
Damage, the spokesman said, was confined to the furnace. There were no injuries. The fire, which started at 3:48 p.m., was reported out in 30 minutes.
