College of the Canyons meets defending state baseball champion Cerritos today in a home game at noon.

Canyons (1-1) is ranked second in the state. The Cougars defeated Cerritos, 5-4, Thursday in a rematch of last season’s state championship game. Cerritos is ranked No. 1 in the state.

Biola Officially Out of GSAC

The new Golden State Athletic Conference will begin competition next fall without Biola University as a member.

The conference includes Azusa Pacific University, Cal Lutheran University, Southern California College, Point Loma Nazarene College, Fresno Pacific College and Westmont College.

“We’ve all changed our schedules for next year and dropped games with Biola,” said Cliff Hamlow, athletic director at conference member Azusa Pacific University and chairman of the NAIA District III.

Pro Soccer Comes to Van Nuys

The Western Soccer Alliance, a professional soccer league, will be adding a team from the Valley in 1986.

The Hollywood Kickers are making arrangements to play their games at

Birmingham High in Van Nuys beginning in May.

State Title Fight in Reseda

Mark Wills (6-4-1) will fight Dee Collier (8-4) for the California State Heavyweight Championship on Wednesday at the Country Club in Reseda.

Collier, 26, knocked out Randal “Tex” Cobb in the first round of their fight last October.

The fight is scheduled for 12 rounds. Preliminary bouts begin at 8:15 p.m.

NOTABLE

James McFann, who averaged 43 yards a punt last season for Upland High, has signed a letter of intent to attend Cal State Northridge next fall.

McFann, 6-2, 215, was named All-Southern Section as a punter and earned honorable mention all-league honors as an offensive lineman.

Jim Vreeke of Woodland Hills will compete in a Formula USA circuit race as well as the West Coast Superbike Motorcycle Championship this weekend at Willow Springs International Raceway in Rosamond.

Vreeke was the Kerker West Coast Superbike champion for the last two years.
