Southern Section Soccer Playoffs : Top-Seeded Esperanza Gets 18th Shutout

The top-seeded Esperanza High School boys’ soccer team advanced to the second round of the CIF Southern Section 3-A playoffs with a 5-0 victory over Ganesha Friday afternoon at Esperanza.

It was the 18th shutout of the season for the Aztecs, who improved their record to 21-0-2. Brent Vish led Esperanza with two goals. Shawn Coppage, Bryan Aube and Steve Santos each added a goal.

In other boys’ 3-A action:

Los Alamitos 3, Arlington 2--Senior Robbie Katzaroff broke a 2-2 tie with a goal 36 minutes into the second half to give the Griffins the first-round win over the Lions at Los Alamitos. Joaquin Garcia and Eric Schwandt also scored for the Griffins.

Dana Hills 3, Pacifica 0--The Dolphins scored all three goals in the second half at Dana Hills, including twice in the last seven minutes. Randy Weston opened the scoring and Gabe Smith added the final two goals.

Millikan 3, Mission Viejo 0--Raul Ruiz, Jose Moran and Chris Troy each scored to lead the Rams past the Diablos (14-5-4) in Long Beach.

Long Beach Wilson 4, Capistrano Valley 3--The Bruins scored in overtime to defeat the Cougars in Long Beach.

In boys’ 1-A action:

Capistrano Valley Christian 2, Fillmore 1--Senior Dave Clem broke a 1-1 tie with his second-half goal to lift the Eagles past the Flashes. Tim Terrell scored the first goal for the Eagles (14-5-4).

Orange Lutheran 3, Atascadero 1--Senior Mike Gallegos scored all three goals for the Lancers (15-3-5).

In girls’ 4-A action:

Edison 4, Upland 2--Joy Biefeld and Kendra Whisnand each scored twice as the top-seeded Chargers defeated the Highlanders at Edison. The Chargers (20-3-2) play Palos Verdes on Wednesday in the quarterfinals.

Palos Verdes 2, Newport Harbor 1--The Yellowjackets earned the right to play Edison with a victory over the Sailors at Palos Verdes.

Laguna Hills 1, West Torrance 0--Sophomore Heather McIntyre scored on a penalty kick five minutes into the second half as the Hawks (17-4-3) advanced to Wednesday’s quarterfinals against Alta Loma.

Mission Viejo 4, University 0--The Diablos scored twice in each half to advance to the quarterfinals. Raeann Hubocon scored three minutes into the game on a corner kick from 30 yards. Kim Dutton, Keri Kennedy and Shana DeFries also scored. Mission Viejo plays South Torrance Wednesday.

South Torrance 6, Huntington Beach 0--The Spartans advance to the quarterfinals against Mission Viejo with a victory over the Oilers at Torrance.

Torrance 2, El Toro 0--After the Chargers won a wild-card game to advance to the first round, they were shut out by the Tartars at Torrance.

Claremont 5, Fountain Valley 1--The Wolfpack advanced to the quarterfinals against Torrance with a victory at home over the Barons (9-5-6). Kristy Beauchamp, one of three starting freshman for the Barons, scored Fountain Valley’s only goal.
