SDSU, New Mexico to Compete for Fifth in WAC Standings
The San Diego State and New Mexico basketball teams will play for fifth place in the Western Athletic Conference tonight when they conclude the regular season at 6:30 (PST) at Albuquerque.
In the WAC postseason tournament, which begins Thursday at the home court of the regular-season champion, the No. 5 team meets the No. 4 team and the No. 6 team meets the No. 3 team in first-round play.
SDSU and New Mexico are 7-8 in the WAC and tied for fifth. Wyoming, Utah, BYU and Texas El Paso are tied for first with 11-4 records.
If Wyoming beats BYU tonight, the Cowboys will win the conference title. UTEP will win the conference if it beats Hawaii and BYU defeats Wyoming. Utah can win the WAC if it beats Colorado State and Wyoming and UTEP lose. For BYU to win the conference, it must beat Wyoming while UTEP and Utah also lose.
SDSU is 9-17 overall and New Mexico is 15-12. The Aztecs’ Anthony Watson leads the conference in scoring with a 23-point average in conference play.
