City Wrestling Finals at El Camino Real

The City Section wrestling championships will be held today at El Camino Real High.

The winner in each weight class advances to the state tournament, March 7-8 at Independence High in San Jose.

Preliminary matches begin at noon and finals start at 7:30 p.m.

Dedication Ceremonies

Today for Joe Kelly

The baseball field at Pierce College will be renamed Joe Kelly Field in a dedication ceremony today at 12:30 p.m. The change was approved by the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees on Feb. 19.

Kelly began coaching football and baseball at Pierce in 1966. He was still running the Brahma baseball program when he died of cancer in 1982. He was 58.

Among the guests will be Hudson Houck, a coach for the Los Angeles Rams who played football for Kelly at Eagle Rock High.

A baseball game between Pierce and an alumni team will follow the dedication ceremonies.

Westlake High Hosts Football Coaching Clinic

The Warrior Football Coaching Clinic will be held today at Westlake High at 8:30 a.m.

The clinic will include four seminars hosted by high school coaches of league champion teams.

Dave Murphy of Simi Valley, co-champion in the Marmonte League, will speak on defense. Rick Scott of Hart, champion of the Foothill League, will detail the passing game.

Lou Ferrar of Charter Oak, Southeastern Conference champion, and Jerry White, of Central Conference winner Saddleback, will discuss weekly game plans and the option.

Clinic registration is $13 at the door.

Workshops for

Summer Lifeguard Jobs

Three workshops for summer employment as a lifeguard will be held at Pierce College from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., March 25-27. Cost is $20.

Participants must be at least 15 years old and able to swim 500 yards.

First aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation courses will also be offered at additional cost.

Registration is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and then 6-8 p.m. on Monday through Thursday in the community services office at Pierce.

NOTABLE

Former Cal State Northridge baseball player Pete Callas has signed a free-agent contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. He will report March 14 to the club’s spring training complex in Clearwater, Fla.

Callas, a first baseman, played last season for an independent team in Idaho Falls, Ida. in the Pioneer Rookie League. He batted .339 and led the league in home runs with 11.

Camarillo High basketball Coach John Harbour said he expects to be granted a one-year sabbatical from teaching and coaching to attend graduate school at the University of Arizona.

Harbour, 37, has been the varsity coach for six years. Camarillo, which finished the season 13-11, 5-7 in the Marmonte League, missed the playoffs for the first time in seven years.
