Man Dies When Car Crashes and Burns
A 26-year-old man was killed Friday night when his sports car slammed into a concrete pole, rolled down an embankment and caught fire.
The victim, Dale K. Smerber of Fallbrook, was pronounced dead at the scene, the coroner’s office said.
Police said Smerber was eastbound in the 5100 block of Mission Avenue at 10:10 p.m., when for unknown reasons, he lost control of his car.
Police said several people attempted to pull Smerber from his burning sports car but were forced to retreat because of the intense heat.
Smerber reportedly worked as a car wholesaler in Oceanside.
