SPRING SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Muir Defeats Burroughs, 3-2, on Single Mistake in Tournament Semifinal Game

Muir scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday to defeat Burroughs of Burbank, 3-2, in the semifinals of the La Canada tournament.

Muir loaded the bases with an infield single, an error and a walk, then all three runners scored on a single by Vince Phillips. Burroughs left fielder Bob Niers had been playing deep, and when he charged Phillips’ hit, the ball rolled through his legs.

Burroughs (3-1) had taken a 1-0 lead in the fourth when E.J. Pape singled, stole second and scored on a single by Niers.

The Indians increased their lead to 2-0 in the fifth when Mike Bruce stole second, third and home.

The Mustangs’ Murph Proctor had 12 strikeouts and allowed just four hits while improving his record to 3-0. Larry Hatley (1-1) suffered the loss for the Indians.

Tom Ruffner of Burroughs was 2 for 3 with a double.

Newbury Park 2, Agoura 1--Third baseman Jeff Smith singled in Mark Schlegel in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Panthers the victory.

Schlegel was 2 for 3 at the plate with a run batted in. He also scored the winning run. Senior Glenn Evans (2-0) pitched superbly. He struck out five and walked only one, going all the way

Second baseman Bobby Weer led the Chargers, going 3 for 3. Although he gave up only four hits, Donnie Rea (1-1) took the loss for Agoura.

Buckley 8, Oakwood 4--Senior shortstop/pitcher David Lawson led the Griffins to victory in the non-league game at Buckley.

Lawson was 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs. He also pitched nearly three innings of relief, striking out six and picking up the win. Teammates Luka Pecel and Jack Eskeazi also hit well. They both went 2 for 3 with two RBIs.

Shortstop and losing pitcher Scott Bernstein (0-1) went 1 for 2 with a double, one RBI and scored two runs for Oakwood.

Notre Dame 10, Quartz Hill 1--The Knights took a 5-1 lead after three innings and coasted to the non-league victory at home.

Notre Dame was led offensively by Scott Hayward, who went 2 for 3 with a triple. John Milligan, Jeff Antoon and Sean Shanahan also had two hits each for the Knights (2-1).

Joe Kane pitched the first five innings and picked up his first win of the season.

Simi Lutheran 18, Newbridge 1--Simi Lutheran scored 16 runs in the sixth inning to win its season-opener at Newbridge.

The Barons had seven hits and took advantage of 12 Newbridge walks during the big inning.

Simi Lutheran pitcher Jonathan Doering allowed had seven strikeouts and allowed just three hits in earning the win.

Junior College Softball

Moorpark 14, 8, Victor Valley 0, 1--The Raiders received a pair of strong pitching performances from Jill McAuley and Karen Mead, sweeping the doubleheader at home.

McAuley (3-2) allowed Victor Valley just two base runners in the first game, which was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Mead (3-2) had 15 strikeouts.

Karen Noble led the Raiders (6-4) offensively. She went 3 for 4 and had two RBIs in the first game. In the second game, she was 3 for 3 with one RBI.

High School Softball

Montclair Prep 23, Cal Prep 14--The Mounties trailed after three innings, 14-3, but they scored eight runs in the fifth and 12 in the sixth to win the non-league game at Cal Prep.

Montclair Prep (3-1) was led by Jodi Schenkman, who went 4 for 5 and had five RBIs. Shauna Whitmore had three hits and two RBIs.

Mounties pitcher Samantha Crey is 2-0.

Campbell Hall 18, Flintridge Prep 13--The Vikings pounded out 13 hits in winning the nonleague game at Campbell Hall.

Senior shortstop Tracy Murray led the onslaught, going 3 for 4 with a double, triple and three RBIs in addition to scoring four runs. Teammate Cherise Smith was 2 for 5 with three RBIs, and Jessica Ackroyd was 3 for 5 with two RBIs.

Cecelia Serrano led Flintridge Prep with a triple and four RBIs.

Campbell Hall is 2-0. Flintridge is 0-3.

Boys High School Track

Notre Dame 76, Servite 66, Troy 17--Chris Fisher won the 300 low hurdles and anchored the winning mile-relay team to lead the Knights to the victory at Servite. Fisher also finished second in the high hurdles and had a team-leading 12 points.

Notre Dame’s Jeff Reesing scored nine points. He won the 880, was second in the two mile and fourth in the mile. The Raiders’ Tony Ricci won the shot put with a throw of 47-1, leading Notre Dame to a sweep in the event.

Girls High School Track

Notre Dame 82, Troy 43, Rosary 21--Vicki Hosek scored 15 points and led the Raiders to the victory in the triangular meet at Servite. Hosek won the 880, the mile and was a member of the winning mile-relay team.

Lisa Welch won the two mile race and was second in the mile.

Boys High School Volleyball

Chatsworth def. Westchester 15-6, 15-0, 1-15, 15-10--The Chancellors rolled to an easy opening match victory over the Comets at Chatsworth.

Center hitters Mark Root and Raphael Tulino led Chatsworth with 15 and 14 kills respectively.

Campbell Hall def. Murphy 15-7, 15-7, 15-10--Tim Jensen led Campbell Hall (1-1) with five kills in the Camino Real League match.
