Man in Hollywood Shooting Spree Killed by Police

An unidentified man was shot and killed by a Los Angeles Police SWAT team officer Thursday, after he reportedly went on a shooting spree and then barricaded himself in a Hollywood apartment.

Los Angeles police spokesman Cmdr. William Booth said the man, who had been doing maintenance work at an apartment house in the 1900 block of Las Palmas Avenue, left the building and began firing a handgun about a block away at Highland and Franklin avenues.

When officers arrived, Booth said, the suspect fired more shots before running back to the Las Palmas building, where he barricaded himself in an apartment and turned on gas jets. Special weapons and tactics team officers arrived but waited for gas company workers to shut off the building’s gas supply before firing tear gas canisters into the apartment.

When officers finally entered the apartment after more than a two-hour standoff, Booth said, “an officer involved shooting occurred and the suspect was killed.” He released no additional details of the incident.
