Prep Baseball Roundup : Loara, El Dorado to Play for Tournament Title

Loara pitchers Alan Evans and Rich Milo snapped Robbie Katzaroff’s 30-game hitting steak Friday as the Saxons beat Los Alamitos, 10-4, in a semifinal game of the Loara Tournament at Loara.

The Saxons (5-1) play El Dorado in the championship game at 7 tonight in Anaheim’s Glover Stadium.

Loara scored what proved to be the winning run on a pinch-hit double in the fourth inning by Sal Capraro.

Evans and Milo retired Katzaroff twice and walked him twice.

In the other semifinal:

El Dorado 11, Magnolia 4--The Hawks got 13 hits at El Dorado. Jim Buck and Rob Sporrer homered and Steve Gill and Shawn Blankenship combined on a five-hitter. Magnolia plays Los Alamitos at 3 p.m. today in Glover Stadium for third place.

In fifth-place action:

Esperanza 4, Valencia 2--Aztec pitchers Steve Halweg (2-0), Jeff Darby and Jeff Oeff combined on a six-hitter at Esperanza. The Aztecs (3-1) play host to Katella at noon today.

In seventh-place action:

Marina 5, Huntington Beach 4--Keith Laszlo, who had a solo homer in the first inning, hit a sacrifice fly to score Bruce Schmidt with the winning run in the sixth.

Ocean View 8, Edison 4--Billy Daymude, Blaine DeBrouwer and Mike Fyhrie hit home runs for the Seahawks (3-1), who scored five runs in the first inning. Jeff Kent and Bernie Colacchio homered for Edison (5-2).

In consolation round action:

Villa Park 9, Newport Harbor 3--The Spartans scored three runs in the fourth and four in the fifth at home. Howard Saldarina was 2 for 4, scored two runs and had three RBIs for the Spartans.

In nonleague action:

Irvine 6-3, Anaheim 1-2--Brian Brocoff had three hits to lead the Vaqueros in the opener, and Jeff Walters singled in Bobby Hamlin with the winning run in the sixth inning of the nightcap at Boysen Park in Anaheim. Hamlin had a two-run homer in the second game.

Mission Viejo 6, University 1--Phil Houston (1-0) pitched a one-hitter through six innings for the Diablos at Mission Viejo. Robert D’Marino was 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Jack Bailey went 1 for 3, with three RBIs.

Buena Park 2, El Toro 1--Robert Torrez singled in Rob Robinson in the bottom of the seventh for the Coyotes at Buena Park. Paul Bunch hit a first-inning home run for the Coyotes’ (1-2) other run. Stan Terryman (1-1) went seven innings for the win.

In the Glendora Tournament:

Sonora 6, Bishop Amat 4--Rob Stuart and Scott Ihorn hit two-run homers for the Raiders (3-1) in the third-place game. Scott Rajcic (2-0) got the win.
