Prep Baseball : Olivares Hits Home Run to Give Santa Ana 5-4 Victory

Hector Olivares led off the seventh inning with a home run to break a 4-4 tie and lift Santa Ana High School to a 5-4 victory over Santa Ana Valley Tuesday in the championship game of the Santa Ana/Newport-Mesa baseball tournament.

Olivares’ home run, his first of the season, made a winner of reliever John Heffler (2-0).

Heffler’s two-run triple in the fifth inning gave the Saints (3-0) a 4-1 lead going into the sixth, but six walks by Santa Ana relievers in the sixth inning helped the Falcons tie the score.

Corona Del Mar 5, Saddleback 3--Bob Ardell’s two-run triple in the sixth inning broke a 3-3 tie to give the Sea Kings a victory in the consolation championship game.

Mitch Melbon pitched four perfect innings for Corona del Mar, but tired and was replaced prior to the fifth inning. Steve Clark (2-1) was the winner for the Sea Kings (4-2).

In Loara tournament consolation action:

Pacifica 2, La Quinta 1-The Aztecs led 1-0 going into the seventh inning, but the Mariners rallied for two runs in the final inning to defeat La Quinta.

Eddie Murphy won in relief for Pacifica, pitching two scoreless innings. Tom Hanson picked up his second save of the season.

In nonleague action:

Esperanza 8, Servite 7-- Catcher Eric Cox hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Aztecs (5-1) the win.

Steve Halweg (3-0) pitched the top of the seventh.

The Friars are 2-3.

Brea 7, Kennedy 2-- The Wildcats (2-3) used four different pitchers in the win at Kennedy High.

Pitcher-first baseman Jim Murry went 2 for 4 for Brea and also pitched two scoreless innings. Mike Bogosian added a three-run double and Rick Rizzo was 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

El Dorado 3, Irvine 0--Pitcher Scott Holcomb (3-0) went the distance for the Golden Hawks (6-1), allowing only four hits and striking out eight at Irvine.

El Dorado was led by Jeff Petredes who went 2 for 3 and drove in a run. Brett Boone was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

University 4, Dana Hills 3--The Trojans trailed 3-0 in the sixth inning but a two-run home run by University’s Todd Krueger and a solo shot by Al Contrera tied the game at 3-3. Steve Conner’s single in the bottom of the seventh drove in Bart Silverman with the winning run.

University is 2-2, Dana Hills is 1-4.

In Oceanside tournament action:

Laguna Hills 7, Oceanside 0-- Hawks pitcher Wayne Helm threw a no-hitter and struck out 12 to lead Laguna Hills to a first-round victory.

Helm(2-1) allowed only three runners to reach base the entire game and took a perfect game into the sixth inning before hitting Guy Ledesma.

The Hawks (3-4) scored six runs in the first inning. Laguna Hills added one more in the second inning to close out the scoring.
